The Public Domain

May 29, 2023 by Sage G.C. in All

So it's said: Get a good ship, follow the Westward Winds, and in six month’s time, you’ll see Her. With this, a love for exploration is growing. But it took many a millennia before myth became truth…

The Voyages

First Voyage

Davy Jones, aboard the Flying Dutchman, heard voices and insisted on following them beyond the great blue. Nobody supported this voyage and wrote him off as a mad man. He never returned, but many legends and folktales did.

Second Voyage

Charlotte The Disparate was married into royalty, but her heart lied at sea. She was able to secure partial funding to explore beyond the west coast for new fishing spots, as the Nouveau rivers and lakes drew less and less each year. Unfortunately she never returned. It was officially declared The Private Isles are the only major landmasses in The World. But then…

Third Voyage

Several hundred years later, a message in a bottle arrived on the shore of the Pirate Bay with the signature of Charlotte herself. It was passed around, stolen, studied by scholars. Some wrote it off as a hoax but the news had already spread: there’s a New World out there. Empira West immediately fully funded a fleet to explore the Seventh Sea, despite governments still condemning it. It worked. These Empirates, intercepted by The Pirate Bay, were the first to return.

Mad Dash

And now, everyone wants a piece of the pie. Pirates, Empirates, Privateers, and lone daring sailors; it’s a Mad Dash to what all describe as freedom and opportunity. Ships are being robbed in record numbers, and U-Ship is considering adding The Public Domain as a stop. Unfortunately the Seventh Sea is restless, and many are setting off on adventure without a plan, finding only their demise.

But tales of the Public Domain mostly inspire hope;
Hope that there’s a world The Almighty Dollar doesn’t reach;
Hope that there are places and ideas that are never owned, and never will be;
Hope that there are wonderful people and creatures that will inspire us and help change our way of life. Everyone has a personal dream tied up in the Public Domain, and some even despise the idea of it entirely, for it challenges their comfortable life on The Isles.

Nevertheless, what can be found out there will, in fact, change everything.
